The GRAMMY-nominated, Oslo-based vocal ensemble Trio Mediæval has been appointed the Don Michael Randel Ensemble-in-Residence at the University of Chicago for the 2025-26 academic year.
The crystalline voices of Trio Mediæval (comprising members Anna Maria Friman, Linn Andrea Fuglseth, and Torunn Østrem Ossum) have captivated audiences since the group was founded in Oslo in 1997. The GRAMMY-nominated trio’s core repertoire features sacred monophonic and polyphonic medieval music from England, Italy, and France; contemporary works written for the ensemble; and traditional Norwegian, Swedish, and Icelandic ballads and songs. The group’s fruitful relationship with the legendary ECM Records, collaborative spirit, and busy touring schedule has earned them worldwide renown. "Singing doesn't get more unnervingly beautiful," wrote Joshua Kosman of the San Francisco Chronicle, who declared their San Francisco debut "among the musical highlights of the year." He added, "To hear the group's note-perfect counterpoint - as pristine and inviting as clean, white linens - is to be astonished at what the human voice is capable of."
The ensemble will visit the University of Chicago campus three times throughout the residency, during the University’s autumn 2025, winter 2026, and spring 2026 quarters. Trio Mediæval will present multiple signature performances, as well as lecture-demonstrations, masterclasses, and engagements with schools and community programs in the city.
The autumn residency features a lecture-demonstration at International House on Friday, November 7. The trio's winter residency includes the performance Between Two Worlds: on the cusp of the Ars Nova on Friday, January 23 at 7:30 PM at Rockefeller Chapel, presented by UChicago Presents. The residency wraps up in the spring with two performances: a joint concert with UChicago's Women's Ensemble and University Chorus on Saturday, April 11, as well as a second concert presented by UChicago Presents on Sunday, April 12 at 3:00 PM at the Logan Center for the Arts, featuring the program Lumen-de-Lumine.

The crystalline voices of Trio Mediaeval have captivated audiences since the group was founded in Oslo in 1997. Rooted in medieval monophonic and polyphonic traditions but also champions of contemporary, jazz, and improvisational genres, the three singers—Anna Maria Friman, Linn Andrea Fuglseth, and Jorunn Lovise Husan—are vocal chameleons. The San Francisco Chronicle says it best: “Singing doesn’t get more unnervingly beautiful.”
This program highlights early music alongside traditional Norwegian hymns and recent compositions by Sungji Hong.
