University Symphony Orchestra Concert & Livestream - Northern Highlights

University Symphony Orchestra

December 6, 2025 | 8:00PM
Mandel Hall

Acclaimed pianist and composer Daniel Pesca joins the University Symphony Orchestra for the Chicago premiere of his recent concerto, Up North, an evocative musical depiction of the composer’s fond memories of family trips from Alabama up to Northern Michigan each summer. This three-movement concerto, co-commissioned by the University of Chicago Symphony, is the latest in a series of “personal resonances of geography” by Pesca. Also on the program: Edward German’s Autumn from The Seasons and Tchaikovsky’s iconic Symphony No. 5 in E Minor, which bears witness to the composer’s struggle between the opposing demands of the formal traditions of European compositional practice and his own partiality for an emotional and expressive progression of musical events.

Admission FREE, with donations appreciated: $10 general, $5 students.
