Logan Center Performance Hall

Members of the University Symphony Orchestra and Performance Program faculty artists present a special concert showcasing lively and colorful music of Brazilian composers. The USO cello ensemble performs Heitor Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras No. 1 and No. 5, the latter featuring renowned soprano soloist Sarah Brailey, Director of Vocal Studies. Visiting Director of the UChicago Jazz Ensemble and internationally acclaimed guitarist Fareed Haque performs selections from Villa-Lobos’ collections of Preludes and Etudes for solo guitar. To round out the program, 2020 Concerto Competition Winner Avery Kirschbaum presents the Marimba Concerto by Ney Rosauro, who was heavily influenced by the musical style of the older master. Charming melodies and catchy rhythms derived from Brazilian folk music, as well as a conspicuous freshness and vitality, characterize the music of both composers.
