Music as Politics: The Role of Plena in Contemporary Puerto Rico

Plena Libre

March 5, 2020 | 12:30PM
International House, Coulter Lounge
Free

The lyrics of many plenas deal with contemporary events—they recite the news of the day, satirize politicians, and provide social commentary. Dain Borges (History) will moderate a discussion with members of Plena Libre and Omar Torres-Kortright (Executive Director, Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center) about the role of plena in Puerto Rico, including its place in life after Hurricane Maria and in recent political protests on the island.

Presented in partnership with UChicago Presents and the International House Global Voices Program.

Free and open to the public.
Light lunch will be served.

Persons with disabilities who may need assistance should contact International House in advance of the program at 773-753-2274 or
