Fulton Recital Hall, Goodspeed Hall

Join us for a unique and immersive experience in the world of traditional Chinese opera! In this workshop, you will have the opportunity to witness performances of two of the most renowned opera styles in China – Kunqu Opera and Peking Opera – by Yunqi Zhang, a visiting scholar from Peking University and an experienced performer in both traditions. But it's not just a passive viewing experience – you'll also get to learn about the intricate performance techniques that make these operas so mesmerizing. Our expert speaker, Yunqi, will introduce you to not only the vocal but also the performance system of the 旦 (Dan, female role) in Kunqu Opera, including the use of hand gestures, body movements, stylized gaits, and characterization skills. You'll gain a deeper appreciation for the artistry required to bring these characters to life on stage.

In addition, Dr. Sarah Brailey, Director of the Vocal Studies Program, will help bridge the gap between the different vocal traditions by explaining Chinese opera singing techniques in familiar terms for Bel Canto singers. Her insights will help you understand the technical aspects behind these amazing performances.

Don't miss this incredible opportunity to experience the beauty and complexity of traditional Chinese opera. Whether you're a lifelong fan or completely new to the genre, this workshop is sure to leave you with a newfound appreciation for the art of opera.
