2020 Instrumental Audition Requirements (Zoom)

Instrumentalists who are interested in joining the University Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, and Chamber Music Program are encouraged to audition via a pre-recorded video submission. Students who are unable to submit a pre-recorded video may sign up to perform a real-time live audition via Zoom.

Live auditions for all instruments except piano will take place from October 1-5; live piano auditions will take place after during Weeks 2 and 3 and will be scheduled individually by the director of the Piano Program.

Note: Students living in the dorms will not be allowed to play their instrument(s) in their dorm room at any time. Students will need to come to the Logan Center and conduct their audition from one of the designated Zoom audition rooms at their scheduled time.

Instrumental Audition Requirements

  • Furnish all information required on the audition form and select your preferred audition time.
  • You should prepare 6-8 minutes of repertoire for your audition.
    • You may choose the excerpts you play, but they should demonstrate contrasting moods and styles – something fast and flashy, and something slow and lyrical.
    • You do not have to play a complete movement or a complete piece: shorter segments are fine.
    • Choose repertoire that you are comfortable with and that will allow you to demonstrate your most confident playing.
    • Your audition repertoire does not have to be memorized.  You do not need piano accompaniment.
  • Students living in the dorms will not be allowed to play their instrument(s) in their dorm room at any time. Students will need to come to the Logan Center and conduct their audition from one of the designated Zoom audition rooms at their scheduled time.

If you are unable to perform a live Zoom audition during the October 1-5 period because you do not have access to your own instrument or because you are subject to the extended 14-day quarantine, you should still schedule a Zoom audition for October 1-5. In that Zoom meeting, the Director of Performance Programs will work with you to discuss procedures to access a University instrument and to schedule a subsequent audition. Access to practice instruments will be arranged beginning Week 2 of the quarter.

Instrumental ensemble placements will be announced via email at the beginning of Week 2. Individual ensemble and program rehearsals begin on Monday, October 5 (Week 2 of the quarter).
