The Department of Music is thrilled to announce that three graduate students – Ryan William Garvey, Baldwin Giang, and Gabriel Novak – received 2025 Charles Ives Scholarships from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
Since 1942, music awards have been selected annually by Arts and Letters members to recognize and support fellow artists, honoring both established and emerging composers.
Ryan William Garvey, Baldwin Giang, and Gabriel Novak will receive Charles Ives Scholarships of $7,500 each. The music awards will be presented alongside the architecture, art, and literature awards at the American Academy of Arts and Letters’s annual Ceremonial in May.
“My warmest congratulations to Ryan William Garvey, Baldwin Giang, and Gabriel Novak upon receiving 2025 Charles Ives Scholarships. The dimensionality, vitality, and radiance of their music is inspiring. Their exemplary citizenship, leadership, and friendship are treasured by me and by those who are fortunate to work with them.” —Augusta Read Thomas, University Professor and Founder and Director of Center for Contemporary Composition and The Grossman Ensemble, University of Chicago
