Interview with Nicholas Carlson, Wind Ensemble Director

Nicholas Carlson

What are you most looking forward to in the coming school year?

I am most looking forward to engaging the University Wind Ensemble in another year of artistic and intellectual growth. Each concert presents an opportunity to explore diverse repertoire, refine ensemble cohesion, and deepen our understanding of the musical, historical, and cultural contexts that inform our practice. It is my hope that our collective work not only uplifts the ensemble’s musical achievements but also makes meaningful contributions to the broader campus community.

What else do you do during a given week besides your role at UChicago?

Each day, I make time for score study, piano, and clarinet. I am also a full-time faculty member at the University of Illinois Chicago, where I teach ensembles, applied clarinet, and courses in the music education curriculum. I also enjoy walking and spending time with my two dogs, Rudy and Rye Bread.

Tell us about a memorable performance experience.

In May of 2024, the University Wind Ensemble performed AMP by Alan Theisen, a twenty-minute concerto for piano and wind ensemble that featured the phenomenal pianist Marianne Parker. The students had the opportunity to work directly with the composer in preparation for the performance, which provided them with unique insight and experience in bringing the concerto to life.
