Encontros e Despedidas: Jazz and the Music of Brazil
The music of Brazil has been a vital resource for numerous musicians across jazz history. Artists such as Stan Getz, Duke Pearson, Sarah Vaughn, and Pat Metheny have drawn from numerous Brazilian composers as vehicles to expand their art. At the same token, composers and improvisers in Brazil such as Antônio Carlos Jobim and Hermeto Pascoal have drawn from jazz recordings and performances to develop thier singular musical approaches. For our final concert, the Jazz Ensemble will follow in this tradition and explore as vehicles for improvised musical expression the lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and complex rhythms of a range of Brazilian musical genres including music composed and performed by such artists as Hermeto Pascoal, Egberto Gismonti, Elis Regina, Antônio Carlos Jobim, Rosa Passos, Milton Nascimento, Airto Moreira, and Chico Buarque.
Free Admission.
