The Composition and Sound Practices program at the University of Chicago Music Department presents Critical Sounds (April 10th - 11th, 2026).

We are thrilled to host:

  • Gascia Ouzounian, one of the most exciting researchers in sound studies of our time, working at the intersection of sound studies, architecture, urban studies, and science and technology studies, as our keynote speaker.
  • Evicshen (Victoria Shen), a boundary-pushing sound artist, experimental music performer, and instrument maker, as a performer and a speaker.
  • DJ Lady D (Darlene Jackson), one of the most celebrated DJs with a profound influence in Chicago, as our main performer at the closing party event.
  • Heather Roche, the queen of extended techniques, whose work focuses on the performance of contemporary music, for a performance event.

Critical Sounds is a symposium/festival presenting work situated at the intersection of sound studies, composition/installation/performance of sound practices, as well as electroacoustic music produced through critical, experimental, and interdisciplinary approaches. The symposium/festival also brings the influential electronic dance music scene of Chicago to the conversation. We are excited to reach out to the Chicago experimental music and art scene and bring practitioners from the field to campus.

Critical Sounds features a keynote speaker, performances, practice-based research presentations selected through a curated call, and open studios showcasing students’ works.

Critical Sounds will be hosted at the Greenline Performing Arts Center & Arts IncubatorLogan Center for the Arts Performance Penthouse (901), and Fulton Hall in Goodspeed Hall at the Music Department of UChicago.

Full schedule TBA.
