Linguistics Research
The Department of Linguistics brings together faculty and students pursuing wide-ranging inquiry into the nature of human language. Faculty engage in both synchronic and diachronic research on languages from around the world, supported by an array of specialized labs and research groups — reflecting the department's commitment to diverse theoretical and empirical approaches to the study of language.

Languages
The Department of Linguistics at the University of Chicago offers students the opportunity to study a rich array of languages spanning multiple continents and linguistic traditions. Courses in languages such as Swahili and American Sign Language are offered in multi-quarter sequences at elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels, while Greek — with its four-thousand-year written tradition — is also represented in the curriculum.
Undergraduate Information
The Department of Linguistics offers undergraduate students the opportunity to study language through both a major and a minor, each designed to provide a strong foundation in the scientific study of language. With a combination of core courses and flexible elective options, these programs allow students to explore key areas of linguistics while pursuing their individual academic interests.
Graduate Information
The PhD program in linguistics is structured to guide students through advanced coursework, research, language training, teaching experience, and professional development over the course of their graduate study. As students progress through the program, they move from foundational academic preparation to independent research and dissertation work, while also gaining the skills and experience needed for scholarly and professional success.
