For half a century, Barbara Schubert has served as an esteemed anchor of Chicago’s orchestral tradition. She leads the University of Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the DuPage Symphony Orchestra and the Park Ridge Fine Arts Symphony—an output that spans canon from Berlioz to Tchaikovsky alongside premieres by local composers like Daniel Pesca and Shawn Okbebpholo. “The scene in Chicago is incredibly rich,” she says. “Listeners can hear exciting performances of music from around the world and through the centuries, all over Chicagoland.” Celebrating her fiftieth year on the podium, Schubert says, “I’ve learned so much from collaborating with hundreds of musicians and performing thousands of works. It’s been challenging, inspiring, and enormously rewarding.”
