Augusta Read Thomas's "Selected Works for Orchestra" released on Nimbus Alliance

University Professor Augusta Read Thomas released on January 6th, 2014, the first in a series of three new collections of her work on UK record label Nimbus Alliance. "Selected Works for Orchestra" contains six compositions written between 1995 and 2013. These include:

  • Aureole for orchestra (2013) - DePaul University Symphony

  • Words of the Sea for orchestra (1995) - Chicago Symphony Orchestra

  • In My Sky at Twilight for soprano and ensemble (2002) - Christine Brandes, soprano and Chicago Symphony Orchestra

  • Carillon Sky for solo violin and chamber ensemble (2006) - Baird Dodge, Violin and Chicago Symphony Orchestra

  • Silver Chants the Litanies for French horn and 18 players (2004) - Greg Heustis, horn and Southern Methodist University Wind Ensemble

The next in the series will be released in Spring 2014 and include nine works composed for smaller ensembles than this first release. The third CD release will feature the world premiere and first recording of the Saxophone Concerto Prisms of Light recorded with William Boughton and the New Haven Symphony Orchestra in February 2014. 

Augusta Read Thomas is currently a University Professor in UChicago's Music Department, and before this has been the Mead Composer In Residence at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for nine years, and has had appointments at the Eastman School of Music and Northwestern University.
