Visiting Campus
Graduate Students
All students who are accepted for graduate study will be hosted for a prospective students' day or a single day. For more information, or to begin planning your visit, email musicadmissions@uchicago.edu or contact the Department secretary (773 702 8484) or Academic Secretary (773 702 2089). Students who opt to visit in advance of admissions decisions may sit in on classes and learn about the Department from available students and faculty, but should know that such visits are neither formally organized nor encouraged.
Undergraduate Students
Prospective undergraduate students are strongly encouraged to attend the formal information sessions held by the Department of Music, in cooperation with the Office of College Admissions. These sessions, tailored to high school juniors and seniors, are given by faculty and staff members and will provide a solid overview of opportunities at the Department, along with ample opportunity for questions. While students may come to campus at other times, it is not always possible to meet with faculty and staff, nor to receive the amount of dedicated time and information available at a regular session. The prospective student sessions are the best means of exploring musical study and performance opportunities at Chicago.
Prospective undergraduate students with a specific interest in studying musicology, ethnomusicology, or composition as a major are encouraged to contact the director of undergraduate studies, Prof. Kaley Mason, to arrange a meeting during their campus visit.
Please check back here for prospective student dates during the 2008-09 school year. You can also check the Department of Music calendar for specific performance ensembles’ concert dates.
All students: Preparing for a Campus Visit
When preparing for a campus visit, it is recommended that both prospective undergraduate and prospective graduate students:
- Consult the academic calendar to ensure that you aren’t planning a visit during a break, intercession, or University holiday.
- Familiarize yourself with the Department and the University as much as possible via the website.
- Prepare questions and points of discussion ahead of time that you would like to raise during your visit.
For questions concerning undergraduate study, write Prof. Kaley Mason, krmason@uchicago.edu, or the Academic Secretary at musicadmissions@uchicago.edu
For questions concerning graduate study, write Prof. Travis A. Jackson, travieso@uchicago.edu, or the Academic Secretary at musicadmissions@uchicago.edu
