Prospective Students

Visiting the Department

Graduate Students:Quad

When considering a campus visit, prospective graduate students should first consult the University of Chicago academic calendar, to avoid coming during interim periods or other times when classes are not in session.

Next, it is advisable to contact the Department Secretary of Student Affairs. S/he generally arranges for a visitor to meet with multiple faculty members and graduate students, to sit in on classes, and to learn about the Department from current graduate students. To make the most of these opportunities, a prospective student should begin coordinating a visit several weeks in advance. Email musicadmissions@uchicago.edu to start the process.

Also, students are strongly discouraged to visit the Department in the time between application submission and decision notification from a Department of Music faculty member or the Office of the Dean of Students. January and February are customarily the months when applicants are evaluated, with decisions being announced in March if not earlier.

Note: Please read thoroughly the information contained on this website prior to making a campus visit.

QuadUndergraduate Students:

The Department of Music, in cooperation with the Office of College Admissions, holds several programs during each academic year for prospective undergraduates. These group presentations, tailored to high school seniors and high school juniors, are given by faculty and staff members and are designed to include information on music academics and performance, as well as general topics and logistics, with ample opportunity for questions. Prospective students are strongly encouraged to attend these sessions. While students may come to campus at other times, it is not always possible to meet with faculty and staff members on an individual basis, nor to receive the amount of information available at a regular session. The formal presentations are the best means of exploring musical study at Chicago.

Prospective undergraduate students with a specific interest in studying musicology, ethnomusicology, or composition as a major are encouraged to contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies, Professor Steven Rings, to arrange a meeting during a campus visit.

As always, when considering a campus visit, prospective students should first consult the University of Chicago academic calendar, to avoid coming during interim periods or other times when classes are not in session.
