Prospective StudentsWinter

Graduate Program Overview

Graduate students in the Department of Music are admitted in one of three Ph.D. programs: History and Theory of Music, Ethnomusicology, or Composition. Students who complete a sufficient subset of the requirements for their Ph.D. program are eligible to apply for the M.A. degree.

The common aim of these programs is to provide broad, thorough training of the highest quality in an intimate atmosphere stressing individual interaction with faculty and the flexible cultivation of the student's particular talents and interests. The interdisciplinary model is a trademark of the University’s approach to graduate education. As such, the Ph.D. curriculum at the Department of Music is informed by the faculty’s vision of fluidity among the sub-disciplines of music in scholarly areas, and between music and other fields of knowledge. Additionally, students are encouraged to develop practical skills that include vocal and instrumental proficiency; musicianship skills are tested in a series of Practicum examinations. Students also must meet specific foreign language requirements.
