Prospective Students
Performance Program Overview
The U of C has a thriving Performance Program. Over 550 musicians from throughout the University and community participate in the Performance Program, covering a broad spectrum of genres and repertoire, presenting over 100 concerts per year. For a full listing of ensembles and programs, click here.
The major difference between a performance program and a performance degree program is that the degree granted is not a Bachelor of Music, but a Bachelor of Arts in Music. Therefore, one cannot get a degree in violin performance, etc.; however, one can partake in the same opportunities for performance study as are available at other institutions, i.e. playing in ensembles, studying privately, receiving coachings, participating in master classes, attending concerts, etc. Performance at the U of C is extra-curricular, rather than co-curricular, meaning that activities are carefully scheduled so as not to conflict with classes, offerings are open to all students regardless of major, and all opportunities are free of charge with the exception of private lessons; no academic credit is given and no grades are assessed.
