William C. White, Director, University Chamber Orchestra

A year after graduating from the College of the University of Chicago, William C. White (AB ’05) was appointed to the conducting staff at the Department of Music. He earned his degree in music with honors, winning the Olga and Paul Menn composition prize during his senior year. While in college, White led a very active performing life, playing viola in the University Symphony Orchestra, singing in the Motet Choir, and directing the musical activities of the University Theater. For his wide-ranging contributions to the arts, White was also awarded the Millard-Pierce Binyon Prize for Distinction in the Humanities.

White independently pursued studies in orchestral conducting during the summers, studying with Michael Jinbo at the prestigious Pierre Monteux School. He is currently in his second year as music director of the Hyde Park Youth Symphony and teaches music at the Hyde Park Day School. White also served a one year interim position as music director of the Presbyterian Church of Barrington, in which capacity he directed the premiere of his Easter Oratorio.
