Artists in Residence
Pacifica Quartet
The Pacifica Quartet, one of today's most dynamic and exciting young string quartets, has quickly built an enviable reputation for its brilliant ensemble work and impassioned interpretations. Formed in 1994, the Pacifica burst onto the chamber music scene when it captured three of the nation's most prestigious awards: the 1998 Naumburg Chamber Music Award; the 1997 Nathan Wedeen Management Award at the Concert Artists Guild Competition; and the 1996 Grand Prize at the Coleman Chamber Music Competition. Most recently, the Pacifica was awarded the 2006 Avery Fisher Career Grant. This coveted grant provides support to talented young musicians considered to have great potential for major careers. The group is only the second chamber ensemble in the 30-year history of the program to receive an Avery Fisher Career Grant.
Members of the Pacifica serve as Artists-in-Residence at the University of Chicago's Department of Music, the first resident ensemble in the history of the institution. Their five-component residency offers many valuable opportunities for interaction with students and community:
- Reading and discussion sessions with student composers
- Coaching rehearsals for chamber ensembles, leading orchestra sectionals, and teaching private lessons
- Serving as the core of the Rockefeller Bach Soloists
- Performing for the Contemporary Chamber Players concerts
- Presenting chamber music concerts of their own
