Deborah Gillaspie, Curator, Chicago Jazz Archive
Deborah Gillaspie has been Curator of the Chicago Jazz Archive at Regenstein Library since 1987. In addition, she recommends the purchase of materials in popular music — especially jazz, blues, and gospel — for the Library's General Collection. She is an alum of the University's Graduate Library School.
Gillaspie studied orchestral percussion and jazz drumset with Chicago percussionist and teacher Phil Stanger, and was a member of his percussion ensemble until his retirement in 2000. In 2002, she joined forces with guitarist and Quadrangle Club manager Christ Nogulich to establish monthly jam sessions at the Club. There, local jazz musicians meet U of C students and staff to enjoy a meal and play jazz; the sessions are free and open to the public.
