Center for Italian Opera Studies

Gossett

The Center for Italian Opera Studies (CIAO) is the home of editorial work on the critical edition of Gioachino Rossini's music. Philip Gossett, Robert W. Reneker Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago, directs the Center. The Center also provides research and editorial support for the critical edition of the Works of Giuseppe Verdi, published by the University of Chicago Press, and for other projects in 19th-century Italian opera. Marta Tonegutti is managing editor of the Verdi edition and music editor at the Press.

Since the fall of 2006, the Center and the Department of Music of the University of Chicago have welcomed a series of scholars of 19th-century opera, supported by a Mellon Distinguished Achievement Award granted to Philip Gossett.

The Center maintains a small research collection of books and journals in English and Italian related to the life and works of Rossini, as well as microfilms and digitized media of Rossini’s autograph manuscripts, performance materials, published works, and related materials. University of Chicago faculty, students, and visiting scholars may request access to these materials here. We regret that we are unable to make these facilities available to researchers from other institutions or the general public.
