USO Halloween Concert

Each year USO Director Barbara Schubert brings together the University Symphony Orchestra and the Hyde Park School of Dance for a haunted and harmonious Halloween concert. Enhanced by costumes, storytelling, and special effects – including a distinctive, thematic entrance by the costumed conductor – this family-friendly concert includes great orchestral masterpieces, unusual treasures of the repertoire, and even an occasional pops medley!  Halloween concert themes include “Dangerous Women,” “Cosmic Adventures,” “1001 Arabian Nights,” and “The Wild, Wild West," among others. This family-friendly event’s two performances always fill up, so plan on showing up early—and in costume!

This year's Halloween concerts take place on Saturday, October 28 at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Join us for Witches, Winds, and Whirls!

Messiah Performance

The annual performance of Handel’s Messiah, as performed by the combined University of Chicago choirs, is a beloved Hyde Park holiday tradition. A masterpiece replete with poignant arias and exuberant choruses, Messiah is a musical celebration of Christ’s birth and divinity, and an oratorio of resounding vocal beauty and grace. Presented in the magnificent acoustic of Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, this annual program marks a lovely way to begin the winter season.

The 2017 Messiah performance will take place on Sunday, December 3 at 3:00pm in Rockefeller Memorial Chapel.

Gilbert & Sullivan Production

The Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company and the Department of Music join together each spring to showcase the legendary musicality and wit of William S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan.
