The Department of Music’s Computer Music Studio is an important research and production tool for students, faculty, and staff. Current facilities support hardware and software synthesis, MIDI programming and sequencing, digital audio recording, editing and signal analysis, digital signal processing and music calligraphy.

Two studios are maintained by the Department and are available to graduate and undergraduate students who are enrolled in, or have completed, appropriate course work. Studio A is is equipped with a Macintosh Pro, a Digidesign Pro Tools HD system, auxiliary digital audio and MIDI peripherals and a six channel sound system for diffusion and spatialization. Studio B is reserved for beginning students and has capabilities similar to Studio A’s, appropriately scaled down.

Qualified students doing advanced research or creative work may petition the Director of the Computer Music Studio for permanent individual studio time. Available software includes: Max/MSP, Pro-Tools, research software from I.R.C.A.M, Finale, Sibelius, C-Sound, Final Cut and others as required.

The Computer Music Studio provides sound reinforcement, audio recording, synthesis, and digital signal processing to the University and the greater community. Additionally, the Computer Music Studio regularly sponsors performances important works by guest composers as well as those of students and faculty.

The Joseph Regenstein Library

The University of Chicago library system is home to one of the largest and richest research collections in the world. Spread over six locations, the library has more than 7.6 million print volumes, 59,000 sound recordings, films, and videos, and 35,200 linear feet of archives and manuscripts.

The Joseph Regenstein Library, named after the fourth-generation Chicagoan passionate about research and innovation, houses more than three million books in the humanities and social sciences. Regenstein's music collection is one of the most extensive of any American university, and includes some 98,000 volumes pertaining to music as well as a collection of more than 35,000 recordings, plus the ever-growing Chicago Jazz Archive, one of the best in the world. Regenstein also contains the Department of Special Collections, a repository of archival and rare manuscript and published materials. The Wieboldt-Rosenwald Collection of German Folk Song, with over 200,000 songs, is one of the largest folk-music collections in the world.

The Joe and Rika Mansueto Library

The Joe and Rika Mansueto Library will use innovative technology to house up to 3.5 million volumes of print material in high-density space, and will provide an important new preservation facility for rare materials and outstanding user space for faculty and students. Slated to open in fall 2010, it will sit immediately adjacent to Regenstein Library and will prevent the library from having to resort to off-campus storage. The library’s design is the work of renowned Chicago-based architect Helmut Jahn.
