SOLOIST STACY ECKERT TO REPLACE JESSYE WRIGHT IN USO CONCERT
Due to illness, soloist Jessye Wright is unable to appear in the University Symphony Orchestra's upcoming performance of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 2 ("Resurrection"). Mezzo-soprano Stacy Eckert replaces Wright, and performs in this soaring meditation on the human experience with the Orchestra, combined choirs, and soloist Kimberly Jones. Music Director Barbara Schubert conducts.

The University of Chicago Symphony Orchestra, University Chorus, and Motet Choir, with Chicago-based soloists Kimberly E. Jones and Jessye Wright will present two monumental performances of Gustav Mahler’s SYMPHONY NO. 2 IN C MINOR (“Resurrection”) on Saturday, May 31 at 8 pm and Sunday, June 1 at 4 pm at Mandel Hall on the University of Chicago campus. Music Director Barbara Schubert conducts.

The University of Chicago Symphony Orchestra presents a Springtime Showcase concert on Saturday, April 26, 2008 at 8:00 p.m. in Mandel Hall on the University’s campus. The concert opens with Johann Strauss Jr.'s "Overture" to the popular comic operetta DIE FLEDERMAUS under the baton of guest conductor William C. White, and continues with two works presented by winners of the University’s 2008 Concerto Competition: Tchaikovsky’s VARIATIONS ON A ROCOCO THEME with Eric Kim, violoncello, and Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in D-flat Major, Op. 10, with soloist An Qi. University Symphony Orchestra Music Director Barbara Schubert conducts the concerto performances.

Free lunchtime concerts feature variety of professional and student performers
The University of Chicago Department of Music has a long tradition of offering the Noontime Concert Series. These free lunchtime concerts are held weekly, on Thursdays at 12:15 pm in the beautiful setting of Fulton Recital Hall, and are of 45 minutes to one hour in duration. Designed to serve the University community and Hyde Park neighborhood with quality, accessible matinee concert programming, the series showcases both professional and student performers. From string quartets to pianists, vocalists to jazzers, the Noontime Concert Series is a unique cultural treasure at the University of Chicago.

The University of Chicago Department of Music Performance Program commences its 2007-2008 season of concerts with Auditions for all ensembles and programs, to be held September 17-27 at Goodspeed Hall, Department of Music, University of Chicago campus. Audition appointments may be scheduled September 17-24 via the Audition Hotline, (773) 702-9075. Ensembles and programs include the University Symphony Orchestra, University Wind Ensemble, University Chamber Orchestra, University Chorus, Motet Choir, Rockefeller Chapel Choir, Jazz X-tet, New Music Ensemble, Middle East Music Ensemble, Central Javanese Gamelan, Chamber Music Program, Piano Program, and the Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company, Inc. annual production. Performance Program offerings are open to undergraduate and graduate students, alumni, faculty and staff members, spouses, and community musicians. Ensemble and program directors nurture each player’s technical and artistic growth and encourage a lifelong commitment to music.
