What degrees does the Department award?
The Department of Music is a research-based Department, and awards a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Music History and Theory, Ethnomusicology, and Composition. Master of Arts degrees are awarded en route to the doctorate. The Department does not offer degrees in the performance of music. For more information on academic programs, click here.
Goodspeed Hall, located at the southwest corner of the University Quadrangle, houses the Department of Music. The entrance to the building is on the inside of the Quadrangle, which can be accessed from the archway located at 1010 East 59th Street. Our doors are located between the Classics Building and Gates-Blake Hall.
Is the building accessible for those with disabilities or special mobility needs?
Yes. The first thing you will see upon entering Goodspeed Hall is an elevator, and there are accessible restrooms located on the 4th floor. Fulton Recital Hall is equipped with a ramp for wheelchairs or walkers, in addition to handrails for the four steps down into the seating area. What kinds of events does the Department sponsor?
The Department sponsors events that encompass a broad spectrum of repertoire and academic interests. In addition to concerts presented by the Performance Program’s twelve ensembles, there are weekly Noontime Concerts by soloists and small groups on Thursdays, frequent Friday afternoon Colloquium lectures by visiting scholars, the student-led EthNoise! Ethnomusicology Workshops, concerts by our Artists-in-Residence, and other professional concerts organized by the University of Chicago Presents. Can I rent out your facilities?
Fulton Recital Hall is used extensively for Department events, and is not commonly available for rental. Practice rooms are first-come, first-served, and are reserved only for Department classes, workshops, and coachings.
Do you have a mailing list for events?
Yes. You can sign up for weekly events announcements through email, printed concert notices, or both on our Mailing List page.
